May 22, 2026 marks the 26th International Day for Biological Diversity. This year’s theme is “Guard one land's life, enrich all beings' thrive.” Conservation begins where we live. Let us revere nature, respect life, and work together to build a home where all beings thrive in harmony.
The 2026 International Day for Biological Diversity awareness event, co‑hosted by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People’s Republic of China and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, and jointly organized by the Chongming District People’s Government, the Shanghai Bureau of Ecology and Environment, and the Center for Environmental Education and Communications of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, took place on May 22 in Chongming.
As a key ecological barrier at the Yangtze River estuary, Chongming has in recent years advanced its ecological island development through restoration projects such as returning farmland to wetlands and managing invasive species. These efforts have significantly improved habitat quality, making Chongming a vivid example of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. The event emphasizes action at the local level to contribute to global biodiversity conservation, while building broad societal consensus on safeguarding our shared ecological home.
