May 8 marks the 79th World Red Cross Day. Under the theme “Red Cross, Our City, We Act Together,” the Chongming District Red Cross Society launched a series of activities as part of Red Cross Charity Week, including public awareness campaigns, first aid experiences, and humanitarian fundraising, aiming to engage more people in the Red Cross cause.
On the morning of May 8, a “downtoearth” charity market at Gangyan Town’s farmers’ market attracted many visitors. Stalls offering health consultations, first aid information, and public convenience services were set up in a row. Staff handed out leaflets while explaining knowledge about blood stem cell donation and related topics.
Among the activities, the first aid experience zone was the most popular. A crowd gathered around a mannequin as a Red Cross first aid instructor knelt down to demonstrate chest compressions, explaining each step. Many visitors followed along and practiced.
At the same time, the “May 8” fundraising campaign was held. Many passersby scanned QR codes to donate to the “Blood Stem Cell Transplantation Assistance” project and the “Caring for Children’s Growth” project, showing their support for vulnerable groups. One donor said, “The amount is small, but if everyone lends a hand, society will become better and better.” Another added, “It’s World Red Cross Day today. Seeing this event, I wanted to contribute.”
In the afternoon, a public welfare training session titled “Training 80,000 Certified Emergency First Responders,” a practical project commissioned by Shanghai Municipality, took place at the district’s first aid center. Unlike the morning’s experiential learning, this training was more systematic and professional.
Red Cross instructors taught cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other first aid skills in a structured manner. Participants practiced according to the training procedures, creating a focused yet orderly atmosphere. To receive certification, participants had to pass a practical assessment. One trainee said, “I don’t have a medical background, but after learning basic first aid, I can help if someone faints in a public place.”
The Red Cross Charity Week runs through May 10. During this period, the district Red Cross Society will also collaborate with various towns to organize a series of activities to further promote first aid knowledge.
