Golden strokes on emerald fields: Hengsha's living rice artistry reaches new heights

Each golden autumn, Hengsha Island transforms into a breathtaking open-air gallery. Thousands of mu of rice fields ripple like golden waves in the breeze, unveiling stunning "earth murals" across the landscape. Once a traditional rice-growing region at the Yangtze River's mouth, this area has reinvented itself through innovative "rice paddy art," becoming a shining example of agricultural tourism. From single seeds to artistic harvests, Hengsha is rewriting the story of modern farming.
This year marks the eighth chapter of Hengsha's extraordinary agricultural artistry. In June, a race against time began as designers started outlining this year's masterpiece. From precise sketching to meticulous transplanting and final touch-ups, the month-long process blended human ingenuity with cutting-edge technology.
While modern rice transplanters ensured uniform spacing and efficiency, artisans hand-planted every border to maintain razor-sharp designs. This perfect marriage of craftsmanship and technology guarantees each growing stalk contributes to the evolving artwork.
"This year's murals feature two distinct narratives," explains designer Yan Weixing.
The southern section (120 mu) presents "Remembering History, Saluting the Future" - a powerful tribute to China's journey from hardship to prosperity. Through living brushstrokes, it depicts the sacrifices of the Eighth Route Army and Chinese People's Volunteers, honoring their legacy while inspiring new generations to build upon their achievements.
The northern section brings mythology to life, featuring beloved animated characters Nezha and Ao Bing amidst symbols of Yangtze River ecology and Hengsha's agricultural specialties (crabs, citrus, and rice). "These iconic figures help visitors connect with Yangtze culture while appreciating our farming heritage," Yan said.
Visitors already marvel at the emerging designs: "The Nezha elements look amazing from the viewing platform!" and "Can't wait to see the full picture when the rice matures in August!"
By October, when autumn winds dance across the fields, these living paintings will reach their peak vibrancy. Here, every rustling leaf and golden stalk extends an invitation - to witness how earth, art, and agriculture unite in unforgettable harmony.
