Power Generation from Renewable Energy Accounts for Over 30%

Chongming photovoltaic power generation and other projects have been launched to promote the building of Chongming into a carbon neutral island, the building of Changxing into a low carbon island and the building of Hengsha into a zero carbon island.

In addition to Made-in-China products, Chinese Referees, and China’s pandas, the news of China's photovoltaic aiding the World Cup has also become a hot topic. The Alcassa 800-MW Photovoltaic Power Station in Qatar, contracted by a Chinese enterprise, can meet 10% of Qatar's peak power demand, and significantly increase the proportion of renewable energy in Qatar's energy consumption, so as to help Qatar fulfill its commitment of hosting the Green World Cup.

The "photovoltaic power generation" project that makes full use of resources also has the same example in Chongming, an ecological island of Yingzhou in the East China Sea.

In Huaxing Village, Luhua Town, located at the southwest end of Chongming, photovoltaic panels are arranged in rows, which is very spectacular. This is the location of the Yuguanglu photovoltaic power generation project in Luhua Town. The square array of photovoltaic panels is erected over a wide water surface. Crab farming is carried out in the water area below the photovoltaic panels, forming a development model of power generation over water and aquaculture under water.

 

"Crabs prefer cool conditions. In the hot summer, the protection of photovoltaic panels provides a more comfortable environment for the growth of fresh water crabs. They live in air-conditioned rooms. Under water, fresh water crabs grow quietly. Over water, photovoltaic devices absorb light and heat and convert them into electricity. The fish-photovoltaic complementation mode can not only breed but also generate green energy, saving land resources", told Wang Ziyuan, the project leader.

In recent years, Luhua Town has been improving the level of fresh-water crab breeding. In order to further develop the industry and help the rural revitalization, in November 2018, the government of Luhua Town signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with Shanghai Huadian Electric Power Development Co., Ltd. Both sides have carried out various forms of cooperation in green energy, modern agriculture, pastoral complex and other green economic fields, focusing on the construction of the Yuguanglu photovoltaic power station and other projects. It is learnt that the total capacity of the project is 44 MW, with an investment of more than 200 million yuan. The first phase of the project is more than 1,200 mu, which has been completed in 2021 to realize grid connected power generation. Compared with the thermal power plant with the same power generation capacity, the project can save about 14,000 tons of standard coal for the power grid every year, and reduce by about 39,000 tons of carbon dioxide.

 

"The first phase of the project has been connected to the grid for nearly one and a half years. We learned from practice, optimized the layout design of photovoltaic panels, and steadily promoted the commencement of the second phase", Wang Ziyuan introduced that at present, the second phase of the project is also under preparation.In addition to fresh-water crab breeding and photovoltaic power generation, the project will also be integrated with the elements of rural culture and tourism. On the basis of fully complying with the laws of nature, photovoltaic greenhouses, "fun photovoltaic" and other characteristic derivative projects are designed and built. Through the multi-level display of photovoltaic technology, modern agriculture and natural scenery, the development of surrounding aquaculture, catering and home stay industries is driven. "The second phase of the project is expected to cover an area of 890 mu. After the completion, it will further strengthen the local industrial economy, make people increase income, and also contribute to the realization of the prospect of carbon neutrality."

The Yuguanglu photovoltaic power generation project in Luhua Townis an epitome of Chongming District's exploration of ecological development and promotion of construction and development into a carbon-neutral island. In recent years, through continuous exploration, Chongming has successively built several photovoltaic power generation projects in Chenjia Town, Hengsha Township, Luhua Town and other areas. Additionally, towns like Gangxi Town, Zhongxing Town are promoting the construction of the fish-photovoltaic complementation project.

The 128-MW fish-photovoltaic complementation photovoltaic power generation project in Gangxi Town focuses on the national goal of carbon peaking and carbon neutralization, realizes the dual benefits of power production and fishery breeding through efficient and comprehensive utilization of land, and builds a modern green fishery demonstration area integrating ecology, intelligence and standardization and a science education base on fish-photovoltaic complementation ecological breeding. After completion, the project will generate about 140 million kWh of electricity annually, save about 43,400 tons of standard coal and reduce about 108,300 tons of carbon dioxide annually. The great increase in the proportion of clean energy in Chongming is of great significance for cultivating a green and low-carbon production and living concept, building a beautiful countryside and constructing a world-class ecological island.

As the largest estuarine alluvial island worldwide and the third largest island in China, Chongming is the green lung of Shanghai, an important ecological barrier, the gateway of the Yangtze River and the lobby of the Yangtze River Delta. Green waters and mountains are wealth. At present, Chongming is unswervingly following the path of ecological priority and green development, and adhering to the simultaneous measures of emission reduction, source control, carbon fixation and carbon sink enhancement. Chongming strives to build itself into a carbon neutrality island and Changxing Island into a low-carbon island featuring international leading marine equipment industry. Hengsha Island is exploring the construction of a zero carbon island to provide the Chongming example of the early realization of the strategic goal of carbon peak and carbon neutrality. Under the goal of carbon peak and carbon neutrality, Chongming’s fish-photovoltaic complementation and agriculture-photovoltaic complementation projects were completed and put into operation, marking the construction of the carbon neutral island.

Chongming has stuck to the principle of ecological island for 20 years. Over the past 20 years, Chongming has shut down nearly 1,000 heavily polluting enterprises with high energy consumption, laying the foundation for carbon reduction. Under the guidance of ecological development, Chongming focuses on the energy structure, builds a new power system, and promotes clean energy to replace fossil energy. In 2018, the first unit of Shanghai Shenneng Chongming Gas Power Plant generated electricity, playing a leading and exemplary role in the application of natural gas, a clean energy.The fish-photovoltaic complementation and agriculture-photovoltaic complementation projects in Chenjia Town, Luhua Town and Hengsha Township have been completed and put into use successively. Besides, wind farms and other projects are continuously converting the kinetic energy into electricity.

To achieve the goal of carbon peak and carbon neutrality, it is even more dependent on the participation of the whole people.In Hengsha Island, we can see the details of carbon reduction everywhere. The communities have established an ecological integrity system, and all low carbon behaviors in the region have been recorded into the information system.Many farmers use solar water heaters and electric lights. Water saving devices and energy-saving windows and doors are standard equipment for many farmers. Many communities have taken the lead in building low-carbon demonstration areas. Street lamps and buses are powered by electricity. Some villagers in Xin'an Village, Sanxing Town have installed solar photovoltaic panels on their roofs. In addition to self-use, the generated electricity can also be sent to grid.

Now, carbon peak and carbon neutrality has become a new business card of Chongming's ecological characteristics. It is reported that at present, the total installed capacity of renewable energy in Chongming has exceeded 574,000 KW, including photovoltaic, wind and biomass energy, and the proportion of renewable energy power generation in the total electricity sales in Chongming's three islands has exceeded 30%. That is to say, 3 KWh of every 10 KWh of electricity consumed by Chongming people is produced from clean energy on Chongming Island, which is the highest proportion in Shanghai.
