At present, Chongming has officially entered the main flood season when heavy rainfall and strong convective weather happen. The situation also puts forward a test for Chongming's flood prevention system. Recently, new progress has been made in the construction of phase II project of raising standards for flood control around the Chongming Island. The wave walls of the seawall projects along the costal line have been completed on schedule, and the flood section has met the closure requirements.

The construction of phase II project of raising standards for flood control around the Chongming Island starts from Laoyao Port in the west and ends at Huxun Road in the east, with a total length of 56 kilometers. The project passes through seven towns and townships, including Chengqiao Town, Xinhe Town, Buzhen Town and Chenjia Town. It is learnt that the raising standards of flood control levee is an important construction content of the phase II project. By widening and heightening the top of the levee, heightening the wave wall, adding a wave elimination platform and a wave elimination dam, the upgraded levee can withstand the climax level once in 200 years and the gale of 12 force, instead of the previous climax level once in 100 years and same-frequency wind speed.

Affected by the pandemic at the beginning of this year, the construction of phase II project of raising standards for flood control around the Chongming Island was once suspended. After the situation stabilized, the first batch of 775 workers returned to work in a closed-loop manner on May 13 after comprehensive study and judgment and benchmarking with the requirements of the flood control work node.On May 30, the whole project resumed production, with a total of 2,287 workers participating in the resumption of construction. Under the unified coordination and deployment of the Transportation Committee of Chongming District and the joint efforts of the construction agencies and all construction workers, the flood control sections of the whole line of the project have met the closure requirements before the main flood season. 

At present, the construction of phase II project of raising standards for flood control around the Chongming Island is progressing orderly. Next, according to the embankment’s reconstruction, a scenic greenway dominated by slow traffic is to be built along the whole line of the project. After completion, it will be connected with the phase I project and become a composite channel integrating flood control, ecological and landscape functions.
